Tutoring & Development

The Math and Writing Lab, the newest addition to MCC, offeres students tutoring in various subjects. You can just drop-in when you're on campus and get some help. No need to make appointments weeks in advance! In order to receive help, you'll need to complete a Tutor Request Form when you come in or beforehand.

Tutoring is not intended for students who want to receive an “A” in their course, but rather for students who are struggling and are at risk of failing a course.

Tutoring Schedule

Each student is eligible for up to 2 hours of free tutoring per week, per course, per semester. Once they fill out a tutor request form, they are required to sign a contract of obligation (see back of tutor request form).

All tutoring must be done on campus to protect both tutor and tutee. Remember, tutoring is a service, not a right. There are tutors capable of assisting you with most subjects. If you have specific needs, please contact Donna Dooley at (603) 668-6706 ext. 329 or ddooley@ccsnh.edu.

Who Are Your Tutors?

  • Peer tutoring is an effective method of helping students be successful because peer tutors have taken and passed the course with a ‘B' or better.
  • Professional tutors are also available for Reading and Writing during certain days.
  • Professors spend some or all of their posted office hours in CAPS to provide access to professional walk-in tutoring.

Computerized Tutoring Programs

There are also a number of software programs and tutorials available to students via computer. For example:

  • PLATO (tutorials in all courses)
  • MAVIS BEACON (software for learning keyboarding)
  • Online Resources (accessible on and off campus)

Study Groups and Group Tutoring

Students are encouraged to join or start study groups with classmates. This is often successful in improving students' confidence and skill in a particular class.

Want to be a Tutor?

Tutors often report that they have been more successful in their own coursework when they help other students, because it helps them keep the material fresh in their minds.

In order to qualify as a tutor, you must be a student at Manchester Community College and have received a B or above in the course you wish to tutor. MCC's peer tutoring program is CRLA-certified, which means that all tutors must successfully complete the certification process. For more information about tutoring, contact Donna Dooley at (603) 668-6706 ext. 329 or ddooley@ccsnh.edu.
